George had been sleeping rough and in hostels for 25 years, addicted to valium and drinking too much. But a chance visit to a Brigit Riley exhibition five years ago at the Serpentine Gallery inspired him to start drawing and he hasn’t stopped since. George says ‘I love doing the pictures, but am never satisfied with the results…I don’t think of it as art. Just lines. Just putting straight lines on paper….the designs for the next drawing always comes to me while I am doing the current one’. Each piece is painstaking to create and endlessly fascinating to look at. Never quite tangible, the illusion of perception is played out almost tangibly as brain and eye struggle to concur.

Since December 2003, George’s work has been shown in several galleries as well as Publicis and Credit Suisse First Boston. He will also be shown later in 2004 at Crypt Gallery, The Groucho Club and as part of a special project exhibition at Tate Modern in October. The reaction to George’s work has so far been overwhelming.
