John’s impressive body of work explores the theme of the ubiquitous ‘big brother’. He says ‘Under surveillance even uniformed officials are not free from the electronic eye. Watched by CCTV, watched by the viewer, each unaware of the identity of the other. I am interested in the built-in desire of needing to know everything at all times’. As the world gets increasingly digitised, it seems only true human randomness and freedom is afforded to those with power or who live on life’s fringes. The outsiders.

John’s mature painting style (combining photorealism, pop art and a Gothic sensibility) creates the essence of paranoia, with claustrophobic paparazzi style close ups and peeping Thomas glimpses into other people’s private moments. Narrative fragments create a familiar filmic atmosphere of mystery and suggest the bigger picture lies somewhere beyond the confines of the canvas.

John graduated in 2004 from UEL with an MA in Fine Art and has exhibited across London.
