PRESS RELEASE
Adia Millett, Invasion of My Soul (2009), Wood, acrylic paint, styrofoam model planes, light fixture, chair, 8 x 8 x 12 feet
Swarm Gallery is pleased to welcome Adia Millett to The Nest, a neighborhood artist residency program in the heart of the Ironworks District, beginning July 7. Millett,
the Nest s second artist in residence, divides her time between New York and Los Angeles.
Deeply embedded in a series of metaphors and dark visual poetry, Adia Millett s changing installations suggest a story of a delicate transition from loss to potential love.
Her works examine the beauty of impermanence, the power of the unknown, and the inevitable illusion of innocence. In the artist's studio, symbolic gestures, objects and sounds
convey an abstracted reality where the viewer is asked to fill in the blanks. Millett will be working on a short film project and a series of installations over the course of her
two-month residency.
Adia Millett s upcoming exhibitions in 2009 include a solo show at Mixed Greens, New York, and exhibitions at Sesnon Gallery, Santa Cruz, CA, and UC Riverside Sweeney Art Gallery,
Riverside, CA. She has been included in numerous national and international exhibitions at venues including Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans, LA; John Michael Kohler Art Center, Sheboygan, WI;
Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, Virginia Beach, VA; David Krut Projects, New York; and Swab International Contemporary Art Fair, Barcelona, Spain. She was the recipient of a Project Space residency
at Headlands Center for the Arts, Sausalito, CA, 2007; a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, 2003, and a residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, 2002. Millett earned an MFA from California
Institute of the Arts, Valencia, CA, 2000; and a BFA from the University of California, Berkeley, 1997.

Swarm Gallery is thrilled to be presenting this program with curatorial support from Mixed Greens Gallery, New York
Mixed Greens Gallery was founded as a place to give emerging artists a wider audience. Through its website, printed catalog, gallery exhibitions
and traveling shows, Mixed Greens has exposed a larger community to the engaging and thought-provoking work of dozens of artists. Currently,
the gallery represents twenty-two artists, who are now at varying stages in their careers. The mission is to show work that is not only of
contemporary interest, but will be of lasting art historical significance.
