SWARM GALLERY CLOSED ITS BRICK AND MORTAR SPACE IN JUNE OF 2013. THE GALLERY FEATURED CONTEMPORARY WORK BY EMERGING AND ESTABLISHED ARTISTS THROUGH EXHIBITIONS, FLAT FILES, STUDIO SPACE AND PROGRAMS, AND WAS AN EXPERIMENTAL PLATFORM FOR SOUND, VIDEO AND INSTALLATION-BASED WORK. SWARM CONTINUES AS A CONSULTANCY AND SUPPORT NETWORK FOR CURATORIAL AND ARTIST PROJECTS.

SVEA LIN SOLL / DIRECTOR/OWNER
Svea is a curator of contemporary art. With an undergraduate degree in Paleontology, she worked at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and on a project for National Geographic. Post undergrad, she studied photography and dance in Guanajuato, Mexico before settling back to her native Bay Area to pursue a Masters in Museum Studies and curatorial work. During that time (1999-2001), Svea worked at both the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Oakland Museum of California, and was the exhibitions director at Pro Arts (Oakland, 1999-2005). On the side, Svea was the arts editor for the Oakland-based art and literature publication, Tea Party Magazine. She has served on panels at institutions including the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (SF), the Headlands Center for the Arts, and has sat at many juror tables for other art organizations. From 2006-2010, Svea was on the board of the Alameda Country Arts Commission, and was a board member for the San Francisco Art Dealers Association from 2011-2012. During her time running Swarm Gallery (Oakland, 2006-2013), Svea’s curatorial projects included artist-in-residency programs, windows projects, and experimental film programs. Currently, Svea is transforming Swarm’s identity from a gallery space to a consultancy and project space that places artwork in homes and public spaces, and continues to support artists in varying creative capacities.

MICHAEL THURIN / ASSOCIATE
Michael is a sometimes writer, oftentimes art maker, and always critical thinker. Joining Swarm as an intern during the summer of 2011, he has since been promoted to a staff member specializing in curatorial support, administrative assistance, and many things in between. He is co-founder and editor of Holloway, a bi-annual photography publication dedicated to the exposure of artwork created by students stemming from public higher education. Born and raised in the East Bay, Michael recently graduated with honors from San Francisco State University earning a dual BA in photography and art history.
